| What’s the difference between a generic and brand-name drug? There is actually not much difference, except for the name and the price. A generic drug is called by its chemical name; that the manufacturer assigns it. The generic products have the same ingredients as the brand name drugs. Standard practice and most state laws require that a generic drug be generically equivalent to its brand-name counterpart.
